This past Sunday, dozens of Ottawa residents laced up their shoes and showed up to the RA Centre for something a little different: a chance to walk alongside Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, head of Critical Care at The Ottawa Hospital, and ask him anything about their health.

CTV News Ottawa covered the inaugural “Walk with the Doc” event, framing it against a hard reality facing this city: tens of thousands of Ottawa residents currently don’t have a family doctor. For a lot of people, that means health questions go unanswered, small concerns don’t get caught early, and prevention, the thing Dr. K has built his entire public mission around, becomes a lot harder to practice.

That’s the gap this event was built to fill, even if just for one morning.

Why This Matters More Than a Typical Community Event

Dr. K has said publicly, more than once, that his goal is to “keep you out of the ICU.” Not because he doesn’t want to see patients, but because by the time someone lands in critical care, a lot of the opportunities for prevention are already behind them.

Events like Walk with the Doc flip that script. Instead of waiting for a health crisis to bring people into a hospital system that’s already stretched thin, it puts real medical expertise directly into the community, in a low-pressure setting, for free. No referral needed. No waiting list. Just movement, conversation, and direct access to a physician who’s spent his career thinking about exactly this kind of gap.

For a city where so many residents don’t have consistent access to a family doctor, that kind of direct access, even informally, even just once, is meaningful.

What This Says About the Kind of Care Dr. K Believes In

This isn’t a one-off publicity moment. It’s consistent with everything else Dr. K has built: a podcast called “Solving Healthcare”, a bestselling book called “Prevention Over Prescription”, and closer to home for us, Gyata Nutrition itself, built on the same premise that good, clean, well-sourced nutrition is part of staying out of the hospital in the first place, not just treating what goes wrong after the fact.

Walk with the Doc is that same philosophy in motion.

Consistent movement needs consistent fuel behind it. If you’re building a regular walking habit, getting enough protein in your day supports the muscle and recovery side of that as much as the cardio does. Our whey protein isolate is an easy way to close that gap without overhauling how you eat.

What’s Next

If this is something Dr. K plans to run again, that’s worth watching for. Community health events like this one work best when they’re not a one-time thing but a recurring rhythm people can actually plan around.
